| The
City of Venice is governed by a Council-Manager system
that combines the political leadership of elected
officials in the form of a city council with the
managerial experience of a city manager. The Council meets
on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at City
Hall at 1:30 pm. The City Manager is a full-time executive
with experience and training in administering local
government staffs, projects, and programs on behalf of the
council. It is the City Manager’s responsibility to
recruit and hire staff members and oversee their functions
as well as prepare a recommended budget. The mayor and
council members are elected for three-year terms which are
staggered, so that two council members are elected or
re-elected every year. Each member is limited to three
consecutive terms and must live within the City limits. In
1994, the Economic Development Council was created.

Sarasota
County Leadership
Almost 75% of its 725 square miles is in unincorporated Sarasota
County and is governed by the Board of County Commissioners.
The five commissioners are elected county-wide to two consecutive
four-year terms. The commissioners select a chairman from
among themselves and appoint a county administrator.
The county administration building is located at 1660 Ringling
Boulevard in Sarasota and the Robert L. Anderson Administration
Center is located at 4000 South Tamiami Trail in Venice.

The Chamber works with both of
these governing bodies through
participation in various advisory boards such as the City’s
Economic Advisory Council and the County’s Tourist Development
Council. An annual delegation of Chamber leadership travels
to Tallahassee to meet personally with state legislators and
key department heads.

Venice Airport
Venice Municipal Airport [(941) 486-2711] was built in the
early 1940’s by the United States Government to serve as
a flight training facility during World War II. At the end
of the war, the airport was given to the City of Venice
with the stipulation that if it were not used as an
airport it would revert to the United States
Government.
Located one mile from downtown, Venice Airport is a
non-towered field with two 5,000-foot runways, and
services ranging from aircraft maintenance and sales
through flight training. It has three fixed-base
operators.
The Venice Area is 80
square miles within Sarasota County, with an annual
population average of 90,000.
